Antibiotic sensitivity of the genus Proteus.

چکیده

The classification of the genus Proteus is still to some extent controversial, although recent investigations have clarified the position considerably. The basis of the modern work was the demonstration by Moltke (1927) that 194 Proteus strains all rapidly hydrolysed urea. For the purposes of this paper, the genus Proteus includes all motile, Gramnegative, straight rods which do not ferment lactose, do ferment glucose, and hydrolyse urea rapidly. (With a stab culture in a solid urea-containing medium a positive result is obtained in less than four hours.) On such a basis, Rustigian and Stuart (1943) proposed to include in the genus four species: P. vulgaris, P. mirabilis, P. morgani,* and P. rettgeri, which can be readily differentiated on the basis of a few simple biochemical reactions. Cook (1948) studied the cultural characteristics of the genus more fully and showed the relative frequency of the four species. For the purposes of routine identification it is justifiable to determine the species on the basis of three characteristics only; sucrose fermentation in 24 hours, mannitol fermentation, and indole production, as shown in Table I.

Background & Aims: Emergence of biofilm producing Proteus strains created a serious problem in the treatment of catheter-associated urinary tract infections. The aim of this research was to study biofilm production and plasmid pattern of proteus strains associated with Urinary tract infection. Methods: A total of 88 strains of Proteus were isolated from samples collected in hospitals of Kerman/...

Antibiotic Sensitivity of Proteus Species.

A study has been made of the antibiotic sensitivity pattern of 96 strains of Proteus isolated from clinical material and a further 29 strains kindly supplied by Dr. Patricia Carpenter. The results have been analysed in relation to the different species. The effect of electrolytes on the penicillin sensitivity of Proteus species has also been examined.

Etiology and Bacterial Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Endometritis in Camels (Camelus dromedarius)

The study aimed to investigate the bacterial etiology of endometritis and in vitro antibiotic sensitivity of the isolates in dromedary camels admitted to a clinic. Uterine swabs were collected from 45 animals diagnosed as suffering from endometritis out of 95 infertile female camels. The samples were subjected to bacteriological isolation and identification. All the isolates were tested for in-...

Frequency of Multi-Drug Resistance (MDR) in Gram Negative Bacteria from Urinary Infection in Gorgan, 2011-12

Abstract Background and objective: The periodic evaluation of antimicrobial activity of different antibiotic is essential because antibiotic sensitivity pattern may also changed during short courses. The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of Multi-drug Resistance (MDR) in Gram negative uropathogens. Material and Methods: This study was conducted on 111 gram negative uropatho...
